Yesterday I was a guest on 'Wax Lyrical', on RRR 102.7, Melbourne's oldest independent radio station. I spoke to Namila Benson about Distraction, and my recent newspapers articles on silence and television. Namila was great: informed, passionate and funny.
For a little while, you can listen to the interview here.
And RRR sure knew how to make me feel at home. I don't mean the second-hand couches, relaxed jeans-and-t-shirt mood, or great music.
Their Radiothon drive for subscriptions this year is 'Make Contact': lots of robots, little green men and space-ships. And, awesome of awesomes: a blow-up dalek.
As I've argued with Star Trek, science fiction can possess certain philosophical virtues. By all means, be wary of television - particularly the three-hour-a-day trap. But a little dalek or Doctor now and then can be provocative, challenging or exemplary (i.e. of ongoing philosophical debates). It can be good, cerebral fun.
Certainly better fun than your average blow-up companion...

I didn't even know you could get blow up daleks! Sounds like a great experience and a wonderful radio station.
I love the ABC, and I've had many, many great interviews with the station.
But the ABC studies never had an inflatable dalek...
If you want to see a er very home made Dalek, check out what my friend PC got in the mail...
