The Same Man and Courage

In my 'Books of 2008' for Readings bookshops, I've given a very brief plug for David Lebedoff's excellent book The Same Man.

Writing the lives of two seemingly opposed literary lions (Evelyn Waugh and George Orwell), Lebedoff offers a suggestive analysis of character, class, writing and modern life.  It's a finely-written, thought-provoking piece of work, which works as both biography and social critique.

I've also mentioned Maria Tumarkin's exemplary Courage - I say 'exemplary' because it exemplifies its own theme: courage, heart, grit, chutzpah.

In fact, both books are brave, in a refreshing, bold way: they approach seemingly hackneyed topics, and revive them with flair, sincerity and imagination.
